Homosassa Springs, FL (July 17, 2020) – Around 4:15 p.m. on Saturday, a fatal crash took place at an intersection in Homosassa Springs.
Florida Highway Patrol confirmed that the accident took place at the intersection of South Suncoast Boulevard and Suffolk Terrace in Citrus County. At the time, a 63-year-old man was driving southbound on Suncoast in the left turn lane near the intersection. In another vehicle, a 31-year-old man, a 29-year-old woman, and a 3-year-old child were traveling along and approaching the intersection from the other direction.
When the two vehicles hit the intersection at the same time, the 63-year-old man turned in front of the other vehicle. This caused them to collide with one another. It is believed that the 63-year-old may have been impaired at the time, though police have not officially confirmed this.
The vehicle containing the three victims was struck so forcefully that it overturned several times. This caused the two adults to be ejected from the vehicle. The 31-year-old male driver was hospitalized and tragically succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Police confirmed that the 29-year-old woman suffered serious injuries and the child only suffered minor injuries, as he was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The roadway was closed down in the area for an extended period of time as police worked to clear the scene.
FHP confirmed that charges are pending but their investigation is ongoing.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
Fatal Accidents in Florida
Some of the highest rates for fatal accidents are caused by drivers who are intoxicated at the time of the collision. According to the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles, many arrests take place each year when a driver is traveling with a high blood alcohol content. When a driver makes the decision to drink and get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle, they are risking their own lives as well as the lives of everybody else who shares the roads. These accidents are capable of causing catastrophic harm and lead to many fatalities each year, which is why those who have suffered the tragic loss of a loved one should be prepared to speak with a personal injury attorney who handles wrongful death claims in the state.
For years, our car accident attorneys at Catania & Catania have stood by the sides of victims involved in DUI accidents and the traumatic aftermath that sometimes results.
