The Main Cause of Motorcycle Accidents
Motorcyclists face unique risks on the road, not just because they’re less protected, but also because they’re more likely to be overlooked by other drivers. Among the various dangers they face, speeding stands out as the leading contributor to fatal motorcycle crashes. Whether it’s the rider or the vehicle around them, high speeds leave little room for error and dramatically reduce the time needed to react safely. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), reported that speeding was a factor in 33% of fatal crashes involving motorcyclists, compared to 22% for passenger car drivers. Among all age groups, riders aged 21 to 24 had the highest rate of speeding-related fatalities, with 49% involved in such incidents. Speeding contributes to motorcycle crashes in several ways:- Reduces visibility to other drivers
- Increases braking distance
- Amplifies the impact during a collision
- Causes loss of control, especially on wet or uneven roads
Other causes of crashes
While many factors can contribute to motorcycle accidents, it’s important to understand the primary cause of motorcycle crashes and how other risks compare in severity and frequency.- Failure to yield: Many crashes happen when drivers make left turns in front of oncoming motorcycles. These collisions are often caused by drivers who misjudge a bike’s speed or simply fail to see it.
- Distracted driving: Texting, using navigation systems, or even eating while driving can pull a motorist’s attention off the road just long enough to cause a crash. In dense city areas like Tampa, where drivers must constantly navigate lights, pedestrians, and turns, even a brief distraction can be deadly.
- Lane splitting: Though not legal in Florida, riders sometimes ride between lanes, especially in traffic. This increases the chance of side-swipe accidents or sudden door openings.
- Driving under the influence: Alcohol and drugs impair coordination, judgment, and reaction time. Even a small amount of impairment can cause devastating consequences for motorcyclists who rely on precise movements to stay safe.
- Poor road conditions: Uneven pavement, debris, or potholes that may be manageable for cars are far more hazardous for two-wheeled vehicles.
What should you do if injured in a motorcycle accident?
Seek immediate medical attention and contact a qualified attorney. Even if injuries seem minor, internal trauma or head injuries may not show symptoms right away. If you’re involved in a motorcycle crash in Tampa, take the following steps:- Call 911 to report the accident and request medical support.
- Document the scene by taking photos of the vehicles, your injuries, and road conditions.
- Collect contact information from any witnesses and the other driver.
- Avoid discussing fault at the scene, even if you’re under pressure to do so.
- Speak with an attorney before giving a statement to the insurance company.
Damages you can recover in an injury claim
If another party caused your motorcycle crash, you may be entitled to substantial compensation. Florida law allows injured riders to pursue both economic and non-economic damages for their losses. Under Florida Statute §768.81, when a negligence claim is filed, any contributory fault assigned to the injured person reduces their compensation in proportion to their share of fault. However, this reduction does not bar recovery entirely. For example, if you’re found 20% at fault, your compensation would be reduced by that percentage. The statute also clarifies that each liable party will be financially responsible only for their percentage of fault. This means the court will not apply joint and several liability, where one party could be forced to cover all damages. Instead, judgment is entered against each party according to their share of responsibility, making the process more equitable for all involved. You may be eligible to recover compensation for:- Medical expenses, including emergency care, surgery, hospitalization, and rehabilitation.
- Lost income and reduced earning capacity if you’re unable to work temporarily or permanently.
- Pain and suffering, including emotional distress and chronic discomfort.
- Property damage, such as repair or replacement of your motorcycle.
- Loss of enjoyment of life, if injuries prevent you from engaging in your normal routines or hobbies.
